Guidelines for Choosing an Outdoor Artwork for Your Garden

,

If you are not yet satisfied with how your garden currently looks, perhaps it is missing a great piece of art. When it comes to outdoor artwork, a sculpture is always a good choice. Sculptures bring many possibilities. You can choose a specific material you want—wood, concrete, stone, steel, and other materials. However, purchasing art can be overwhelming.

For first-time art buyers planning to add a sculpture in their garden, here are some tips to help you decide what to purchase:

1: Define What You Want

Because sculptures come in many forms, types, and sizes, you first need to define what kind of art you want to add to your space. Decide if you want your sculpture to stand out or blend well with the theme of your house.

This step can also be helpful if you try to maintain a harmonious relationship between the art and style around your property. Here are some factors you should include in your consideration:

  • Color scheme
  • Art style
  • Scale

Doing this could help you narrow down your choices.

2: Identify a Location

It would also be helpful if you have an identified location before you make your sculpture purchase. That way, you have an idea of the suitable size for that area. When buying artwork for your home, your goal is to make a standout artwork that people can notice when they enter the space. That same principle applies to your outdoor artwork.

You would want something that fits perfectly in the given space. Find inspiration in your garden and use it to highlight the sculpture you would buy. Perhaps some plants could serve to frame the artwork, or maybe there are surrounding trees that can draw people’s attention towards your sculpture.

3: Choose Your Material

You can also further limit your choice by identifying a specific material you would want. Since most of the materials used for sculpture are durable and long-lasting, all you need is to choose which one suits your garden best. Here are some sample materials best used for your garden:

  • Wood: Would blends perfectly with nature; choose this if you want a subtle sculpture in your garden
  • Marble and stone: Great materials if you want to add a classic piece to your garden
  • Stainless steel: A durable, eye-catching piece perfect in large areas
  • Corten steel: If you are a fan of natural rusting, choose this material

Select what speaks best to you and what you would genuinely enjoy seeing every day when you look at your garden.

4: Determine Safety Concerns

Some sculptures are installed by professionals, but there are also those that come with mounting instructions. Before deciding what sculpture to purchase, you might also want to consider the installation process and the people in your household. Do you have kids who love to play outdoors? If you do, perhaps having an unstable structure outdoors that weighs tons might not be a good idea.

5: Learn About the Maintenance

Lastly, your sculpture should look polished throughout the years. Find out what kind of maintenance it needs before finalizing your purchase. Keep in mind, though, that sculptures are bound to also change over time. Its fading color and changing luster can add beauty and character to it.

Conclusion

Adding a work of art in your outdoor space could quickly change the look of your landscape. Sculptures, in particular, are an excellent addition to any garden. Anyone can enjoy looking at them wherever they are and no matter their perspective.

My Mark White kinetic sculpture is more than 10 years old and enjoyed everyday.. Recently we relocated to Arizona from the Midwest and found with the common/daily gentle breezes the sculpture is making “squeaking” sounds at times. The sculpture never made these noises before we moved. Does it or can it be lubricatd? Thank you for any help you can give me.lubricated.

Your sculpture may be squeaking because of dirt or dust build-up around the bearings (the parts which spin.) We wouldn’t recommend using any sort of grease on the moving mechanisms as these are permanently lubricated stainless steel bearings. If you add anything like WD-40 it will make all of the sand/grit stick to the bearings which can compound any issues.
We suggest simply spraying the moving parts (using a bit of water pressure) with your hose as you slowly spin the sculpture back and forth both directions, this will help clean out anything that has accumulated over time. If the squeaking continues, please fill out our warranty & repair form – https://markwhitefineart.com/warranty-repair-form/ This form allows us to get all the details we need in order to serve you best. Once submitted, it will go directly to our studio and they will be contacting you quickly to assist you. The form also lets you upload images and/or videos of your piece. If you are able to provide any still or moving shots for the studio to see, that would be very helpful.
We may decide your sculpture needs new bearings. Our clients have a lifetime warranty on the kinetic drive-train (bearings and solid center rod) so if you need new bearings, we will ship them at zero cost to you and they will arrive with instructions on how to replace them.
